Common questions

training fAQ

Why don’t you use correction collars (i.e. choke chain, prong collar, e-collar)?

In laboratory study, reward-based training has been shown to offer the most advantages and fewest risks for canine learners. Studies show that dogs trained with aversive methods (including correction collars) show more aggression and anxiety-related behaviors1. Conversely, reward-based training has been shown to be more effective, and dogs trained exclusively with rewards have higher obedience and fewer behavior problems1. Scientific authorities (such as the AVSAB, IAABC, CCPDT, APDT, and AKC) recommend using only positive, reward-based training.

For a more detailed understanding, see the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s position statement on humane dog training HERE.

How do I maintain the behaviors my dog learns during Day School or Stay & Train?

Consequences drive behavior. We can teach Rover what to do when a human gives a cue, but it’s up to you to reinforce his continued good behavior and prevent him from rewarding himself when he makes a bad choice. During your dog’s Stay & Train Release Appointment, we will coach you. If your dog is attending Day School, we welcome any questions you may have about the exercises you see in the training videos we send you and are happy to set up a 30 minute Follow-up lesson if your pup isn’t generalizing her new skills at home.

How often should I schedule training sessions?

We recommend at least one training session per week until your pup has met your goal criteria. When training your own dog at home, short daily training sessions (5-10 minutes) are most effective.

How do I access my training videos?

So that videos arrive quickly and clearly, we usually send them through Facebook Messenger. If you haven’t received your videos yet, send us a message on Facebook. If you don’t use Facebook, let us know – we can text or email them to you.

Do I have to pre-pay for training services?

Private Lessons (including dog sports lessons) and Group Classes must be pre-paid in full to reserve your spot.

Stay & Train requires a payment of at least half the service price at drop-off. You do not have to pay to reserve your Stay & Train spot.

What is your refund policy?

You may receive a full refund for Private Lessons up to 48 hours before the lesson. Failure to reschedule or cancel before 48 hours will forfeit your payment.

You may receive a full refund for Group classes up to 1 week before the first class session. Failure to reschedule or cancel before 1 week will forfeit your payment.

What requirements must my dog meet before signing up for training?

All dogs and puppies must have their DH2PP/DA2PP and Bordetella vaccinations. Dogs who are old enough (usually around 16-20 weeks) should have their Rabies vaccination. There is NO age, breed, or spay/neuter requirement.

What do I need to bring for Stay & Train?

We require you provide plenty of food and any medications your dog takes. Some owners opt to bring a favorite bed, blanket or chew bone. If your dog is on a strict diet, we may have you bring appropriate treats.

Do you offer refresher courses for a dog who graduated from Stay & Train?

Yes, we do! Contact us to set that up.

Do you offer week-long Stay & Train?

Stay & Train is a two-week program. Rarely, we have made exceptions on a case-by-case basis. If your dog is boarding with us for a short time, we offer Training While Boarding for $31 per session.

What is Positive Reinforcement?

Positive Reinforcement is a scientific term. It refers to the process of encouraging a behavior by rewarding the dog with something he likes.

It’s a common misconception that “Positive” means desirable or good, but that’s not the case. In this context, “Positive” means to add. When we use Positive Reinforcement, we give the dog (add) something that reinforces (or rewards) a behavior, like a treat. We can also take away a reward to punish behavior.

What training certifications do you have? Why are training certifications important?

Dog training is an unregulated profession. Legally speaking, anyone can call themselves a dog trainer and charge clients money regardless of their competence. To combat inhumane dog training and misinformation, several scientific organizations offer a standardized certification that helps dog owners identify trustworthy professionals.

Our trainers are certified by KPA, one of only three certifying bodies that is trusted by Veterinary Behaviorists. Read about how the American college of Veterinary Behaviorists recommends trainers HERE.

Testimonials

My Miss Ellsa just completed the 2 week Stay and Train and it has made a world of difference. Miss Ellsa is well-behaved now. Carrie did an awesome job with her and walked me through each video and still helped me after I have gotten her home. She will definitely be going back to Day School.

Lori L.

Our private lesson was fantastic! My family and I learned some great basic techniques and tips with our 14 week old puppy that will help greatly. The trainer was super encouraging and very helpful. she answered all of our questions and helped all our family members learn the basic commands and get comfortable with them and the techniques! Highly recommend!

Katrina M.

I live 45 minutes away from Doggie Do Right and I took a Cooper approximately three days a week to day school for over a year, and it was worth every single mile! If I have a concern with Cooper’s behavior, I message Carrie and she quickly replies with a wealth of knowledge. Doggie Do Right is first class!
